On Friday 20th April, a group of Wigan Athletic fans will be walking to our away game at Fleetwood to raise funds and awareness for Joseph’s Goal.

Joseph Kendrick, who is the son of Wigan Today’s Latics reporter Paul Kendrick, suffers from an incredibly rare condition called NKH (Non-Ketotic Hyperglycinemia). His parents were told at birth that Joseph wouldn’t survive for more than a few days, but Joseph is a fighter who is now 8 years old and continues to live with this condition.

This is why critical funds are needed to fund research to help make a breakthrough and find a cure, to improve the lives of around 500 children worldwide who suffer from this rare disease.

Of course, you will also be aware that Joseph was the lucky mascot the day we won the FA Cup Final on 11th May 2013, so we think it’s fair to say all Wigan Athletic fans owe the little man a debt of gratitude for being Latics’ lucky charm on our most memorable day.

The Walk to Fleetwood in April is one of a number of events taking place this year to raise funds for Joseph’s Goal, with the ever-popular Latics Legends game taking place again at Ashton Town FC in May along with a glittering charity ball.

There are already close to 100 people signed up to do the walk including Emmerson Boyce and quite a few of the Wigan Athletic backroom team.

What does the walk entail?

We will set off from the Latics’ training ground at Euxton on Friday morning and proceed to walk 20 [TWENTY] miles to Blackpool, with a few stops on the way for food and drink before retiring to our hotel for an evening meal.

On Saturday, we will be up bright and early again to walk the remaining 12 miles, taking in Blackpool Tower, the promenade and Thornton Cleveleys, before arriving at the Highbury Stadium in good time for kick off.

Want to take part?

It’s simple, just email us at walk4joseph@gmail.com and we will send you all the details you need to get involved.

Want to sponsor the walkers?

Your donation will be more than welcome, no matter how small as we are aiming to raise £10,000 via this event and we are asking each of the 100 walkers to raise £100 each.

Jason Taylor, one of the Wigan Athletic SLOs (Supporter Liaison Officer), is always in or around the Supporters Bar and Stadium before home games.

As a Supporter who has followed Wigan Athletic since the 1970’s (I know he doesn’t look old enough), he watches Latics play home and away, so can be found at all the away games too.

Jason is very approachable, so if you need to talk about any issues or indeed want to put across any ideas you may have regarding the match day experience at the DW Stadium or at away games, please ask for him if you don’t know him already.
