Vote for one of our own

ASPULL politicians are backing one of the borough’s biggest nominations for global sporting glory.

Local lad and former Latics starlet Jordan Flores, 25, is one of eleven nominations for the FIFA Puskas Award for the Scorer of the Goal of the Year.

He faces stiff competiton from great strikes courtesy of the likes of Atletico Madrid’s Luis Suarez and Spurs ace Son Heung-Min.

Past winners have included football gods’ Ronaldo and Messi.

Now a player with Irish League side Dundalk, his name went around the world after a TV clip of his stunning strike against Shamrock Rovers in February went viral.

The award takes it’s name from the late Hungarian football ace Ferenc Puskas…whose brilliant close control and venomous finishing saw him become arguably the world’s first sporting superstar.

The Flores family,  especially dad Manny, are well known and respected all over Aspull and indeed much of the wider borough.

And are stunned and immensely proud that their son has hit such a prestigious short list.

Aspull Standish New Springs Councillors John Hilton, Chris Ready and Ron Conway, along with Aspull community officer Laura Flynn, are now backing the bid “110 percent.”

Supporters can take part in the vote by registering with the FIFA website.

Councillors have worked with and supported Jordan from a young age, right back to when he played for Aspull Juniors FC.

They couldn’t hide their joy at the nomination.

His proud father Manny commented: “We are overwhelmed at the support and comments from all over the town.

“We have always had support from our councillors, who are our best friends, not just local councillors.”

Laura Flynn Community Officer said: “What an accolade for Jordan and his family.

“He is a role model for all our young people”.

“He shows that you can follow your dreams and succeed”.

“Our message is good luck – we are all behind you.”
