We are delighted to confirm that £171,390 which was raised by the fans’ first Crowdfunder campaign in July 2020, and loaned to the joint administrators to enable the club to complete the 2019/20 season, has now been paid back to the Supporters Club.
Our initial Crowdfunder campaign took place in the immediate aftermath of the club being placed into administration. Over £170,000 was raised in a matter of days, and the Supporters Club loaned those donations to the administrators in full, with the agreement that they would be returned following the successful sale of the club.
The donations enabled essential payments for travel, accommodation, stewarding, matchday staff costs and more. They played a crucial role in enabling Wigan Athletic to complete the 2019/20 season, and gave the club a chance to survive.
Now, following the recent acquisition of the Football Club by Phoenix 2021 Ltd, all monies have been repaid to the Supporters Club in line with our agreements with the administrators.
Your individual donations to this campaign were made on a non-refundable basis, and many were made anonymously. Therefore with the Supporters Club now in receipt of the funds, we will ensure that all monies are used to support good causes in the local community – in the name of you, the Wigan Athletic supporters.
After meeting with Wigan Athletic and Wigan Athletic Community Trust, we plan to conduct a survey of the supporters to give everyone their say in how the money should be used. In the coming days we will share links to the survey, and the results and subsequent plans will be announced via our website and social media channels after your responses have been received.
Thank you for your support
Once again the Supporters Club would like to offer our endless thanks to each and every supporter who donated or supported the campaign.
You came together like never before to defy the odds and ensure that our club could not die – and we are delighted that your actions will now be remembered as one of the biggest victories in the club’s history.
