Wigan fans of a certain age will actually remember that amazing day on June 2nd 1978 when the news filtered through that Wigan Athletic had been elected to the Football League after 32 failed attempts.
To celebrate this 4 decade roller coaster ride, we are holding a special night to tell the story of this amazing Wigan Athletic Football Club.
We will start off with a 3 course meal, there will be interviews, Q&As, photo opportunities and the chance to win some great prizes. Hosted by Neill Rimmer, we will start from the beginning as we invite members of the squad that won the matches to get us into the position of being elected to the League. Names like Micky Worswick, Joe Hinnigan, Tommy Gore, Jeff Wright and Peter Houghton will try to tell us how it felt back then.
The journey will continue through the years, where players and managers from our main points in those 40 years will talk us through how great it was bringing Wigan Athletic from a non-league Club, all the way to the Premier League and of course winning the FA Cup.
Owners, Chairmen and Club Secretaries will be invited to put over their views, so don’t be surprised to see Bill Kenyon, Brenda Spencer and others giving us the behind the scenes deats too.
We all sing the “won it two times” songs, we know about the leagues and trophies we have won. On this night we will be proudly displaying some of these cups so you can get up close and personal with the Auto Windscreen Shield, FA Cup and the current EFL League One trophy, plus many more.
Not giving too much away on who will be there (as we want a couple of surprises for you) we will have record holders there, such as Kevin Langley with the most appearances. Warren Aspinall was our record signing. David Lowe with most goals scored. Nathan Ellington the biggest goal scorer at the DW Stadium. There will be many others.
Managers such as Ray Matthias and Dave Philpotts and Graham Barrow will let us in on the coaching secrets. All in all it will be a fun night for all.
We will have players that lifted the FA Cup, Freight Rover Trophy, Auto Windscreen Shield and of course those that have lifted the trophies for winning the various Leagues over the years.
The Dinner is to be held at the Stadium on June 2nd 2018, starting at 7.00pm, tickets priced at £30 can be bought securely online by clicking here. If you want more details or to ask any questions, please email info@wiganathleticsupportersclub.co.uk.
